【1】Intro into Psychology - Key Terms

American Psychological Association = (APA) the largest organization of psychologists in the U.S. with over 122k members.

Behaviorism = describes behavior as something that comes form an external sources (the environment) and not necessarily from an internal one (the mind).

Biopsychology = incorporates knowledge of biology in the study of psychology

Biopsychological model = states that health is determined by a combination of psychological, biological, and social-environmental factors.

Clinical psychology = deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and problematic behaviors.

Cognitive psychology = is the study of mental processes eg. memory, reasoning, problem solving.

Counseling psychology = focuses on helping people with emotional, physical, and mental health issues and help them cope during crises.

Developmental psychology = the field that analyzes how a person's mind changes as they get older.

Dissertation = a long research paper written by people who are studying to get a doctorate.

Empirical Method = measurable data based on observation and experimentation, not on logical reasoning or based on previous authorities.

Forensic psychology = applies science and psychological methods into the justice system.

Functionalism = focuses on the function of behavior in the world and how mental activities help an organism to fit into their environment.

Humanism = a field of psychology with the core belief that there's innate goodness in all humans.

Introspection = when someone examines their own conscious experience as objectively as possible to make the human mind observable.

-ology = suffix that denotes scientific study of.

Personality psychology = study of patterns of thoughts and behaviors that make each individual unique

Personality trait = patterns in thought and behavior

PhD = doctor of philosophy

Postdoctoral training program = allows programs and broaden their research skills under the supervision of other professionals in the field

Psychoanalytic theory = focus on the role of the unconscious in affecting conscious behavior

Psychology = scientific study of the mind

PsyD = doctor of psychology

Sports and exercise psychology = area of psychology that focuses on the interactions between mental and emotional factors and physical performance in sports.

Structuralism = focuses on understanding the individual parts of the brain and their relation to the conscious experience.

【3】Biopsychology - Important Figures

Phineas Gage (1823-1860) Had an accident as a railroad foreman when has was 25 on September 13, 1848 that caused a iron rod to lodge into his head while blasting it down a hole to clear out rocks. Despite this, he was still able to stand, walk, and speak after this incident. In the proceeding months, his behavior changed drastically, changing from a mild soft-spoken man to a violent and odd one that would behave inappropriately. Lost impulse control, a frontal lobe function. It is possible that more than just that part of the brain was impacted.   Henry Molaison (1927-2008) Had a brain surgery in 1953 to treat his case of severe seizures when he was 27. His hippocampus and amygdala were removed from his brain. Although the surgery lessened the severity of his seizures, he was unable to form new memories. Includes things like remembering faces and events that just occurred. However, he could still learn new skills, even though he had no conscious memories of learning them.

  ⭐Developmental psychology examines our physical, cognitive, and social development across our lifespan. nature (genetic predisposition) v nurture (experiences) continuity and stages - How is development divided? Are there separate stages? stability and change - What traits change or persist through time? Researchers that emphasize... learning - "growth is continuous"  biology - "development is a series of stages and sequences"   Some parts of us change, some don't or are hard to change (social attitudes, coping mechanisms)             (temperament) Some personality traits we exhibit when we're 3 years old can persist as we get older Women are born with all eggs they will ever have.
